Some Alice residents are coming together to organize around an online petition calling on the City of Alice and Alice ISD to address road conditions near local schools.
The petition focuses on several streets used heavily by students, parents, school employees and other residents, including the intersection of Jim Wells Drive and Lantana Street.
Organizers argue that the condition of the roads has become a growing concern, particularly in areas that see increased traffic during school drop-off and dismissal. They are calling for more than temporary repairs, saying the city and school district should take a longer-term approach to improving the streets around local campuses.
“Rather than relying on temporary measures, we demand a strategic approach to infrastructure improvement,” the organizers wrote. “Roads should be resurfaced with durable materials capable of withstanding high traffic loads, especially during peak school hours.”
The petition calls for roads in the area to receive more substantial repairs and resurfacing rather than continued reliance on temporary fixes. Organizers say a more permanent approach could help address deteriorating road conditions while providing infrastructure better suited to the amount of traffic the streets experience.
The issue is particularly relevant around school zones, where traffic increases significantly during the morning and afternoon hours. Streets surrounding schools are regularly used by school buses, staff, parents and students, adding to the wear placed on the roadway.
Organizers are asking Alice residents to support the petition and bring greater attention to the condition of the roads near local schools. The effort comes as residents continue to raise concerns about infrastructure and the condition of streets throughout the community.
The petition specifically calls on the City of Alice and Alice ISD to work toward a coordinated approach to addressing the roads in question and to prioritize longer-lasting improvements.
As the petition circulates online, organizers hope the number of signatures will demonstrate community support for addressing the roads and encourage local officials to consider more extensive repairs.
